Potential for Yield Improvement in Combined Rip-First and Crosscut-First Rough Mill Processing

چکیده
Traditionally, lumber cutting systems in rough mills have either first ripped lumber into wide strips and then crosscut the resulting strips into component lengths (rip-first), or first crosscut the lumber into component lengths, then ripped the segments to the required widths (crosscut-first). Each method has its advantages and disadvantages. Crosscut-first typically works best for the production of wider components, while rip-first favors the production of narrower and longer components. Thus, whichever type of processing method is selected for a given rough mill usually depends on the characteristics of the cutting bills the mill expects to process. There is a third option, a dual-line mill that contains both ripfirst and crosscut-first processing streams. To date, such mills have been rare for a variety of reasons, complexity and cost being among them. However, dual-line systems allow the mill to respond to varying cutting bill size demands as well as to board characteristics that favor one method (rip-first or crosscut-first) over the other. Using the Rough Mill Simulator (ROMI 4), this paper examines the yield improvement potential of dual-line processing over single-system processing (i.e., rip-first or crosscut-first processing alone) for a variety of cutting bills and lumber grade mixes.

Dimension yields from Factory Grade 2 and 3 red oak logs
With rising timber costs and a decreasing supply of high-grade timber resources, manufacturers of solid wood products need to adopt more efficient processing methods that better utilize existing timber resources. To address this need, this study explores the potential of converting hardwood logs directly into dimension parts. The specific objective of this study was to estimate the potential cu...
متن کاملPreliminary Full-Scale Tests of the Center for Automated Processing of Hardwoods’ Auto-Image Detection and Computer- Based Grading and Cutup System
Automated lumber grading and yield optimization using computer controlled saws will be plausible for hardwoods if and when lumber scanning systems can reliably identify all defects by type. Existing computer programs could then be used to grade the lumber, identify the best cut-up solution, and control the sawing machines. The potential value of a scanning grading system depends on the accuracy...
متن کاملA Comparison of Four Techniques For Producing High-Grade Furniture Core Material From Low-Grade Yellow-Poplar
Four methods of converting low-grade yellow-poplar lumber into highgrade furniture core material (lumber core) were compared. High-grade core material is used in tops, shelves, doors, and drawer fronts and only minor defects are allowed. Three gang-rip first and the conventional crosscut-first manufacturing sequences were evaluated in combination with 1 Common, 2A Common, and 2B Common lumber. ...
متن کاملSimulation Software Validation Using Real Data
The optimal cutting of lumber into dimension parts for products like furniture, windows, and mouldings is a challenging problem due to the almost infinite number of possible cutting patterns. Yet, finding the optimal pattern that utilizes the available lumber most efficiently is of paramount importance, as lumber costs are a major expense of producers of solid wood parts. This study used data d...
متن کاملCombined DEM and SPH simulation of ball milling
A deeper understanding of the milling operation of ball mills helps mineral processing engineers to control and optimize them, and therefore, reduce their consuming power. In this work, the milling operation of ball mills is investigated using two methods, i.e. DEM and combined DEM-SPH. First, a pilot scale ball mill with no lifter is simulated by both methods. Then another pilot scale ball mil...
